Franchise of the Month – The Salt Suite

This month’s feature is for all of you who love the idea of a unique and fresh business that you can be first to bring to your community (or not depending on how health conscious your community is).  Salt caves first got on my radar a few years back when not one but two opened up in Boulder county.  If you haven’t seen or been in one, they are quiet peaceful spaces where you sit for 45 minutes while a gentle mist of micro particles of salt is sprayed into the air in the room.  Typically, you will be in there with a few others and it makes for a great way to meet other health conscious individuals or spend some time with some friends which is what I did.

The alternative medicine and wellness market has expanded enormously and presents more opportunity for the Salt Suite model. Americans spend about $32 billion annually on alternative medicine, according to the first national estimate of such out-of-pocket spending in more than a decade.

The treatment, known as dry salt therapy (or halotherapy), dates back hundreds of years to Eastern Europe and is purported to confer a variety of health benefits. These include relief from respiratory ailments such as asthma, allergies, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colds, cystic fibrosis, ear infections and sinusitis, as well as skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, rashes and rosacea, according to the Salt Therapy Association.  See more from this US News article about salt caves.

In the Salt Suite model, you will have a small (around 1600 sq. foot) space with good visibility and access.  The space is divided into a front reception area, an adult room and a kid’s room.  It’s a membership model and while I was there I noticed truly rabid fans who come weekly and swear by it.

The investment range will be anywhere from $186K to $306K depending on your ultimate buildout costs.  At this point the founders are only interested in passionate owner operators who want to help others.  With just a few franchisees so far, this is an emerging concept to keep your eyes on.
