Meet Kara McGee – owner of 8 (yes you saw that right) Adam & Eve stores in the Northwest, along with her husband Kraig. And looking to open more!
1. Tell me about your background
I grew up in SE Idaho in a small town named Pocatello. I married my High School Sweetheart, Kraig, and we’ve been married for 26 years! I was always interested in Science and got a master’s degree as a Physician Assistant. I worked as a PA for 13 years before switching careers to become a full time business owner with my husband.
2. What was happening in your life that caused you to want to own a business?
It was my husband’s idea! He saw a niche that needed to be filled so we researched different options. The Adam & Eve franchise was intriguing to us, because it is classy, well-lit and an adult boutique.
3. Why franchising?
We both feel that an adult store that is a franchise is more appealing to main stream America. Franchises are more standardized, professional and just classier and we both agreed that those are appealing things in the adult industry. We didn’t want to be just another “mom and pop” adult shop. Those seem to have reputations of being dark, dingy, and not couple/women friendly.
4. Why Adam & Eve?
Adam & Eve is one of the best known and well respected names in the Adult Industry.
5. What was the biggest surprise when you opened your first location?
The thing I didn’t expect was how many people just stopped in when they saw the Adam & Eve sign! People were doing U-turns in the road to get back to our location.
6. How / when did you decide to expand and keep on expanding?
We signed on to open 7 franchises in the NW. We’ve opened 8 now!
7. Anything you would have done differently now that you know what you know?
We’ve learned so much along the way that I’m not sure how to answer this question. One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that the old real estate saying “Location, location, location!” is absolutely correct. I may have put a few of our locations in different spots…but most of them are right on!
8. What’s the best thing about owning your own business?
I love the fact that we sell happiness. After leaving the medical profession, I was worried I’d miss helping people, but I feel like I help people in different ways, now. I see couples, women, & men having fun shopping in our store and I can say with confidence that the majority of them are going to have a positive, fun experience because of their trip to Adam & Eve. I love that. I also love the schedule of being a business owner. It’s a lot of work, but I can plan to take time off, work from home occasionally, or work the hours that I want.

A few more stores in the next few years.
