Scout and Molly Franchise Opening

What was happening in your life that caused you to want to own a business?

As my twin daughters graduated from Georgetown University, I searched for an opportunity to build something with them.  As it turned out both girls are co-owners of the business with one of them working side by side with me.  We’ve become true partners and our strengths and weaknesses compliment each other.

Why franchising (did you consider a startup)?

A franchise offers structure and support.  I did not consider a startup.

Why Scout and Molly’s – did you look at any other options?

I worked with a fabulous franchise broker who presented several options to me and my daughters after learning about our interests and goals.  Scout & Molly’s was fairly new and I liked the idea of being part of building the brand.  Additionally, the corporate team really values the owners and the unique demographics in each of our areas.  So, while we are all under the same brand, we are allowed to customize our offerings to our particular audience.

What was the biggest surprise when you opened your business?

On the positive side — I truly love retail, our customers and working with my daughter.  On the negative side —  there is so much more back of house work and technology needs than I could have imagined.  Additionally, weather affects sales much more than I would have anticipated.

What would you have done differently now that you know what you know?

Probably nothing different.  Sometimes a little naivete is good.  If I had really known the sheer quantity of work, I might not have made the leap.  I would have missed a great adventure with my daughter.

What’s the best thing about your work?

My customers.  It has been so wonderful getting to know so many fabulous women.

What’s next for you?

We are in the build out phase of our second store.  It should be ready to open mid September.
